Selection Process

The Artist-in-Residence program at the Beach House, Umbi Gumbi, was initiated in 2018. The program builds on the property's rich cultural history, providing an inspirational place for artists to pursue their practice. We accept proposals for residencies of between 2-5 weeks.

The Umbi Gumbi Artist-in-Residence program is open to all arts professionals from Australia and overseas, including visual artists, writers, performers, producers, directors, composers and curators. Residencies can be for concept development, research or for the creation of new work.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are encouraged to apply.

Applications for 2022 residencies closed on 29 October 2021.

In selecting successful applicants, we will take into account:

  • merit of the proposal

  • mix of emerging and established artists

  • spread of different artforms

  • geographical and cultural diversity

We look favourably at collaborations between two or more artists.

The Artist-in-Residence program includes free accommodation and access to the artist studio. Studio includes easels. Artists will need to bring their own art supplies.

The residency does not offer stipends, living allowances or travel assistance. Catering is also the residents' responsibility.  There are supermarkets, cafes, bakery , pub, gelateria, and a whole foods store in Bermagui township, a 7km drive from Umbi Gumbi.
